Remote Emergency Enclosure

A remote emergency enclosure is a box used to house all the necessary components required to enable a luminaire to operate safely when the normal lighting supply fails. A remote enclosure is required when the ‘Integral’ re-engineering of the luminaire is not possible. A typical remote enclosure is manufactured from either various metals such as Aluminium, galvanised sheet steel and Zintec or high density plastics such as polycarbonate or PVC.

The main consideration to take into account when designing a remote enclosure is that the components have enough space in order to operate correctly and there is no thermal compromise. Also, if using a metal enclosure this must be earthed in accordance with all associated electrical regulations.

A remote enclosure is connected to the luminaire via an umbellical carrying all connecting wires and the charge indicating LED. In accordance with BS5266.1.2005, it should be situated at a distance no greater than 1.0m from the luminaire.
