In accordance with BS5266-1:2005, the provision of a horizontal illumination at floor level on the centre line of a defined for routes that are permanently unobstructed and up to 2m wide, the horizontal illuminance at floor level on the centre line of the escape route should not be less than 0.2 lux but preferably 1 lux. For points of emphasis the minimum horizontal illuminance at the floor along the centre line of the escape routeshould be not less than 1 lux. In addition, for escape routes up to 2 m wide, 50% of the route width should be lit to a minimum of 50% of the minimum horizontal illuminance value at the centre line'.
